Whether you are a tourist or on business you will find a wide range of programmes, art and cultural events, and traditional programmes all the year round in Kecskemét. This variety is our heritage from the past, since the "Town of the Golden Sand" has been the meeting point of merchants, different religions and cultures for centuries. Kecskemét lies in the middle of Hungary and has been the seat of Bács-Kiskun County since 1950. It has got more than 110 thousand inhabitants, and it is a dynamically developing industrial, commercial and cultural centre. The town hosts workshops and unique collections of music, fine arts and animations of international fame, and recognised scientific institutions. In addition to these events, Kecskemét welcomes visitors with a whole range of recurring programmes year by year.
The Neo-Baroque building of the Theatre built for the Millennium of the country attracts our attention. It was named after the famous dramatist, native of the town, József Katona, who was the writer of the first Hungarian national drama. Its reminiscence of the Vígszínház (Comedy Theatre) in Budapest is not coincidental: they were both built according to the plans of the famous Vienna architects, Hellmer and Fellner. Its elaborate finish, reminding one of a jewel box, is especially prominent in evening lighting.
The József Katona Theatre of Kecskemét is delighted to be the first Hungarian theatre to stage a guest performance in London’s West End, on the 28th of April. The company has presented many acclaimed performances over the years – which tradition has continued over the last 5 years under the management of actor Péter Cseke. The theatre aims to provide constant challenges for the company, providing them with demanding roles and great acting possibilities.
